The Story of A Sawshop That Started In a Garage

David Saward took up his apprenticeship at a reputable shop fitting company in Clayton. It was 1973 when he completed his apprenticeship in Cabinet Making and Joinery.

It was at the age of 20 when he decided to start his own business. Being young and having limited options, he started working out of his mothers garage in suburban Oakleigh, building kitchens and furniture for customers.

It was in 1981 he established Saward Shopfitters Pty Ltd, still working out of the family home.

David established a working relationship with a large shoe retailer who he worked with for over 30 years. Seeing the need to expand, in 1986 he purchased his first factory in Huntingdale, where the business is still located to this day.

One year later he employed his first apprentice, Gavin, who is still an integral part of the team. In 2001 his son Ben joined the family business as an apprentice.

Once again, David noticed there was a need for more space on the factory floor. In 2007 the factory next door to their own was put up for sale and promptly purchased by the company.  An old doorway which had previously been bricked up was once again opened up and the workshop was expanded into new premises.

That same year a brand new, top of the line CNC Router was purchased, increasing efficiency without sacrificing the quality that customers had come to expect. In the months following, the company also purchased a top manufacturing software package,  to streamline the design process and help customers turn their ideas into reality.

In 2010 Saward Shopfitters changed its name to Saward Joinery Solutions, to better reflect the expanding range of services provided by the company.

To this day, the company is going strong and continuing to expand their horizons offering a unique range of solutions and installations for a variety of new and existing customers.
